ADUs – Accessory Dwellings
An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a second dwelling unit created on a lot with a house, and are also called ”mother-in-law apartments”, “accessory apartments”, “garage apartments”, or “second units”, ”basement apartments” and “rental cottages”. The Portland Zoning Code permits the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in all residential zones of the city.
How feasible is it to add an ADU?
- Using the Community Design Standards avoids Design Review, expediting the design & permitting
- Portland is encouraging increased density through ADUs by waiving the permit fee for building new ADUs at a savings of around $15,000
- Standardized floor plans for 1- and 2-bedroom units, with or without a garage below, speed the process
